Six weeks to Hiit that fat!
For those of
you who are unfamiliar with the abbreviation Hiit, it stands for High Intensity
Interval Training, and is one of the next big crazes in fitness training, the
reasons why I shall explain later on in this blog.
HIIT is being introduced as a six week course. Each class will be
adapted to encourage you, regardless of your ability, to work at your own level
so you can get the work out that’s right for you. Body composition scales will
be available at the beginning of weeks one and six to track the improvement in
your measurements this course has provided (these are optional but record
measurements such as body fat, muscle mass and metabolic age, so are well worth
a go).
What is Hiit Training?
There has
been a lot of research in recent years into exercise and its fat burning
effects. You may have seen some studies that have shown short bursts of
anaerobic exercise to be a great way of burning off those fat calories. Well
Hiit training uses this idea of short bursts of anaerobic exercise such as star
jumps or power lunges alternated with lower impact aerobic exercise to act as a
recovery period.
Who is is for?
Everyone! You will each be
asked to push your fitness levels but adaptations will be made available.
Suitable for both men and women of all ages.
How does Hiit Training work?
Without going
into too much detail, Hiit Training works because of the demand you put on your
muscles to cope with the intense exercise and the oxygen required by them to
function. This oxygen consumption continues long after exercise (Post-Exercise
Oxygen Consumption or EPOC for short), meaning that after your workout your
body is still working hard and burning more calories than after most other
workouts.
What can you expect from the six week
course?
Each class
will be taught by me, Vicki and I will be encouraging each one of you to work
to your maximum during the intervals. Our class will consist of a warm up
followed by six to ten repetitions of high intensity exercise bursts, separated
by periods of lower impact aerobic exercise for recovery, a core section and an
effective cool down.
Over the six
weeks each session will get slightly harder, by progressing the intensity of
the exercises as well as their duration, but it shouldn’t matter too much as you’ll
also notice that you’ll be getting fitter!
Benefits of Hiit:
- Burn more calories in less time
- Burn more calories in the 24 hours AFTER a Hiit workout
- Lower risk of heart disease
- Increased metabolic rate
- Challenges your current fitness levels (so you feel fitter and less bored)
- Helps
to maintain muscle mass
